Sexual Assault

According to Rainn, sexual assault can take many different forms but one thing that remains that same is that it is NEVER the victim's fault.

What is Sexual Assault?

It refers to the sexual contact or behavior that occurs without the consent of the victim. Forms of sexual assault include:

  • Attempted rape

  • Fondling or unwanted sexual touching

  • Forcing a victim to perform sexual acts, such as oral sex or penetrating the perpetrator’s body

  • Penetration of the victim’s body, also known as rape

What is Rape?

Rape is a form of sexual assault; however, not all sexual assault is rape. The term "rape" is used in the legal definition to specify about penetration without consent.

According to Rainn, "for it's  Uniform Crime Reports, the FBI defines rape as “penetration, no matter how slight, of the vagina or anus with any body part or object, or oral penetration by a sex organ of another person, without the consent of the victim.”

Statistics of Rape

  • 1 in 5 women and 1 in 71 men in the United States has been raped in their lifetime.

  • Almost half of female (46.7%) and male (44.9%) victims of rape in the United States were raped by an acquaintance. Of these, 45.4% of female rape victims and 29% of male rape victims were raped by an intimate partner

In today's current events, there has been a movement that has started called the "MeToo" movement. Essentially, it is a movement against sexual harassment and sexual assault. The hashtag #MeToo went viral in October of 2017 on social media and it was used to demonstrate the prevalence of sexual assault and sexual harassment, especially in the work place.
